Baker, Irving
TitleBaker, Irving
DescriptionFormer professor of political science Irving Baker talks about his former work in New York City in public housing administration, his early work at Bishop College, and his recruitment to SMU as director of Afro-American Studies and assistant to President William Tate. He explains the difficulties he faced in building a more pluralistic SMU campus. He describes his courses, including one called 'Black and White,' and the impact on students' social attitudes. He believes the African American studies courses should be integrated with the regular curriculum. He talks about facing opposition by some in the SMU administration to his position, including the belief that his job and goals were irrelevant, and his decision to focus on his tenured professorship in political science. He reminisces about his work as a housing public housing director in New York, including being the target of public demonstrations and racism. He talks about the need for a public administration program at SMU. He describes the work of the private company he started after retiring to help children develop a love for reading, writing, communicating, and grammar. He elucidates his belief that integration is a means to an end, namely to change perceptions.
