| Title | Morgan, Ruth |
| Description | Provost Emeritus and Distinguished Professor of Political Science Ruth Morgan provides her perspective on SMU, which began in 1966. She describes her early years in the political science department, including the department's leadership and congenial atmosphere. She explains how the department became conflict-ridden, due to a rift between younger and older faculty and gender issues. She moved up the ranks as assistant and associate professor, and served as the chair of the University Assembly and first female leader of the Faculty Senate. In the late 1970s she became assistant provost, and then associate provost. She dropped out of her leadership position because of internal politics, and returned to teaching. She was asked to return as provost, a position she initially declined. When Bill Stallcup asked her to come back during the football scandal, she agreed, and became SMU's provost for seven years. She describes the major issues SMU faced as the football 'death penalty'; the SMU budget deficit; turnover on the board of trustees; review of all academic programs culminating in a new academic plan; faculty policy creation and development; and her founding role in the establishment of the Archives for Women in the Southwest. She talks about her role in women's rights, particularly in the field of salary equality. She elucidates the relative position of strength of the provost's office, the need for faculty position control during times of budgetary constraint, various lawsuits, search committee activities, the impact of the various SMU presidents, and her thoughts in general on the growth and development of the university. |
