“Sister
Fuller”
and
“Professor”
:
My
dear
Friends
:
Having
had the
pleasure
of
reading
your
kind
letters
(that
I
shall
reply
to in a
manner
far
less
interesting
than
Kate
is
capable
of)
it
becomes
me
to
express
personally
the
obligation
under
which
I
feel
myself
for them.
Dr
. and
Mrs
Latimer
of
Rochester
,
N.Y
.,
sail
for
home
on
Monday
next
, and
we
wish
to
send
off
a
bundle
of
letters
by them.
It
is
my
turn
to
put
you
in
our
debt
, and
Kate
is
busy
with a
translation
of a
French
story
for
Mrs
.
Sewell’s
“Little
Corporal.”
She has
got
on
famously
this
winter
and
you
would be
surprised
to
hear
her
handling
of the
language
of
Parisians
.
We
have
spent
six
pleasant
and
profitable
months
of
study
, have
seen
the
chief
marvels
of this
marvellous
city
, have
learned
much
about
French
literature
and are
tolerably
at
home
with the
language
.
Kate
speaks
quite
as
well
as
need
be and
I
can
say
anything
I
please
and
understand
all
I
hear
, but
make
mistakes
often
on
gender
&
in
tenses
.
We
have
commenced
studying
Italian
which
is
not as
difficult
and
hope
to
get
a
fair
knowledge
of
it
before
our
return
. For
all
,
we
are not
idlers
, but are
turning
our
advantages
to the
best
account
we
know
how.
We
have
made
some
very
agreeable
American
acquaintances
–
among
others
are
Dr
and
Mrs
Latimer
–
very
intelligent
persons
and
delightful
company
. They
came
abroad
last
September
&
it
is
astonishing
how
much
they have
seen
&
at
low
little
expense
. He has
visited
Greece
,
Egypt
&
Palestine
,
while
she was
studying
music
at
Leipzic
and they have
both
been to
Italy
.
Mrs
.
L
.
tells
…
that
“Herman”
with
whom
there was
so
much
trouble
at the
Ge
…
college
when
we
were at the
Seminary
has
become
religious
and has
preached
since
quitting
college
but
is
now
at the
head
of an
institution
in
some
New
York
town
.
I
was
glad
to
hear
of his
mending
his
ways
She
knew
nothing
of an
engagement
between
him and
Roy
Brodie…
[Part
of this
letter
is
torn
away
and
much
damaged]…
…what
marvels
of
luxury
and
art
there are at
Paris
.
Everything
that
one
can
learn
,
can
desire
for
mind
or
heart
or
body
abounds
on
every
side
.
We
have
seen
much
of
French
people
–
Catholics
,
Protestants
,
liberal
thinkers
(these
last
most
numerous
of
all)
. The
national
traits
of
which
we
read
are
very
evident
–
the
courtesy
,
kindness
,
grace
,
superficiality
,
instability
,
combined
with
great
intelligence
,
quickness
of
skepticism
and
fondness
for the
amenities
of
life
in
all
their
forms
. But
faith
counts
for
little
here
–
in
private
life
, in
politics
, or in
religion
. The
calm
,
broad
basis
on
which
the
sacred
home
life
of
America
reposes
is
almost
entirely
wanting
.
You
have
perhaps
read
of
riots
in
Paris
, in
connection
with the
recent
elections
. They
amounted
to
very
little
and in
our
quarter
of the
city
were
only
heard
of
through
the
journals
.
Paris
is
so
large
,
nothing
save
an
tremendous
revolution
can
ever
move
it
from
center
to
circumference
&
this
quiet
,
intelligent
progressive
party
do
not
desire
.
“We
have
shed
blood
enough,”
they
say
,
“now
has
come
the
war
of
ideals
, and
sooner
or
later
we
shall
win.”
It
seems
strange
that the
daily
papers
must
all
be
examined
by
government
agents
before
their
publication
, to
make
sure
that they
contain
nothing
“incendiary”
–
that
certain
ones
were not
allowed
to be
sold
upon
the
street
but
must
be
sought
at a
bookstore
that…
…
.
Tell
me
about
politics
,
I
beg
you
, and how
Grant
and the
Republican
party
bear
their
victories
.
Tell
me
about
the
reforms
of the
day
, the
Temperance
question
, the
suffragettes
, the
“Woman.”
You
don’t
know
how
hungry
I
am
to
know
what
happens
in the
world
at
home
.
My
dear
Mother
writes
often
and
sends
the
local
news
, but
aside
from that
we
know
less
of
American
by
far
than
you
of
France
.
Newspapers
we
have
told
our
friends
not to
send
us as there
is
so
high
a
tax
that
we
must
dispense
with that
luxury
and
we
are
too
busy
to
go
to the
banker’s
,
miles
away
, and
read…
