Description	Former Professor Emeritus of History Luis Martin discusses the history of SMU academic programs, his Spanish background, expatriation to the United States in the 1950s, the importance of learning foreign languages, and subtle issues of racism. Martin, who began his career at SMU in the 1960s, provides personal insights on SMU during the societal upheaval of the time and the cultural diversification of SMU. He talks about the changing faculty over the decades, noting the growth in nationally recognized scholars at SMU. He regrets the growing professionalization of education, loss of a required curriculum, and lowered barriers to entering college that allow unprepared students to go to college. He gives his opinions about SMU history and the future of education in the United States through anecdotes and examples that span multiple decades.
