Notes	Text: THE MERRIMAN SCHOOL HOUSE, RANGER, TEXAS. Showing five derricks at right of picture erected by Dan Wagner and five at the left of the picture erected by the Texas & Pacific Coal & Oil Company. This is a scene of the famous Wagner and Texas & Pacific Coal & Oil Company fight. Dan Wagner, a contractor for the Texas & Pacific Coal & Oil Company branched out on his own account and secured the lease on the adjoining property and the capital to drill same. The story goes that the Texas & Pacific Coal & Oil Company then started drilling all around him with the evident intention of draining as much oil from beneath his property as possible. Wagner invoked the aid of the State Courts who settled the dispute by limiting his wells to three and the Texas & Pacific Coal & Oil Company to four on that particular property. The outcome was considered a victory for the smaller independent producer. The State exhibited a distinct tendency to protect the interest of a smaller producer against any acts of aggression by a large operating company. PAGE THIRTY-TWO
