Notes	This treasury warrant was issued in Newton by Newton County. The note is printed in blue ink. A simple decorative line borders each edge of the note. The phrase ''COUNTY OF NEWTON,'' is printed within a decorative design along the left border. The phrase ''STATE OF TEXAS.'' is printed within a similar design along the right border. The phrase ''50 CTS.'' is printed within a decorative square design in both upper corners. The plate designation ''C'' is printed adjacent to each square. The phrase ''50 FIFTY CENTS. 50.'' appears across the face of the note. The abbreviation ''No.'' is printed towards the lower-left corner; the number ''353'' is handwritten adjacent to it. The following imprint appears in the lower-right corner: GALVESTON ''NEWS'' PRINT. The place and date are printed on the note. It is signed on the recto by John Moore, Clerk, and Thomas Stuart McFarland, Chief Justice. Moore, a South Carolina native, lists his occupation in the 1860 Census as a mechanic. McFarland, a native of Indiana, is listed in the 1860 Census as a merchant and in the 1863 Texas Almanac as chief justice of Newton County. He was also elected to the Texas Senate of the Sixth Congress (1841-1842), served three terms as chief justice of San Augustine County, and worked as a surveyor (TSHA).
