Notes	This county scrip was issued in Bastrop County. The note is torn from left to right. Along the left side the word ''ONE'' is printed; the number ''1'' appears above and below the word. The number ''51'' is handwritten in the upper-left corner. The scrip amount is spelled out across the center of note as is the following: ''On the First Day of July, 1863, The Treasurer of Bastrop County will pay to the bearer One Dollar. Redeemable in Confederate States Treasury Notes, and Receivable for all County Dues.'' The following imprint appears across the bottom of the note: ''TEXAS PRINTING HOUSE, HOUSTON-E. W. CAVE.'' In the center of the note the words ''ONE DOLLAR,'' ''ONE,'' and BASTROP COUNTY'' are depicted in a red and green overprint. The word ''ONE'' is printed along the right side of the note. The date 1862 is printed; the day and month are handwritten. The note is printed on bank paper. The verso (a blank, unissued private scrip) includes the following: ''B. A. Shepherd & Co.'' of ''Galveston,'' dated ''186 '' printed by ''Latimer Bros. & Seymour, 21 Nassau St. N.Y.'' The note is signed on the recto by William A. Highsmith, County Clerk of Bastrop County, and S. Reynolds, Treasurer of Bastrop County (1860 Census and Family Tree Maker). The 1860 census for Texas lists six Highsmiths all living in Bastrop County. M653, roll 1288, page 248, line 39, lists a W. A. Highsmith as a 21-year-old clerk, born in Missouri, living in the town of Bastrop. Four of the five other Highsmiths in Bastrop County were also born in Missouri. The same census, roll 1288, page 243, line 8, lists Sherman Reynolds as a 44-year-old merchant, a native of New York, living in Bastrop, with real estate valued at $6000 and personal property worth $500. He and his wife(? )had four children, ages 1-12, all born in Texas. BC-15.
