Notes	This audited draft was issued in Houston by the Republic of Texas. Houston was established in 1836 to replace Harrisburg, which had been burned by Santa Anna. Named after Sam Houston, it was the seat of government from April 19, 1837, to January 18, 1840. These notes were issued in 1838 and 1839. This currency sheet includes three notes, each with decorative printer designs bordering all edges of the note. Each note is payable to the same recipient for $25.00 for military supplies. The abbreviation ''No.'' is printed in the upper-left corner of each note; consecutive numbers (9557, 9558, and 9559) are handwritten adjacent to the abbreviations. A dollar sign is printed in the upper-right corner of each note; the amount ''25.00'' is handwritten adjacent to each. The letter ''x'' is written across the face of the notes. All notes are signed by George Washington Poe, acting First Auditor. Poe was a soldier who rose among the ranks during the Texas Revolution; he was appointed acting paymaster general in 1836 and was charged with creating a pay department for the Army of the Republic of Texas (TSHA).
