Notes	This audited draft was issued in Houston by the Republic of Texas. Houston was established in 1836 to replace Harrisburg, which had been burned by Santa Anna. Named after Sam Houston, it was the seat of government from April 19, 1837, to January 18, 1840. Five rows of printer designs decorate the left side of the note. A single line borders the top and bottom edge of the note. The paper is watermarked. The abbreviation ''No.'' is printed in the upper-left corner; the number ''3045'' is handwritten adjacent to it. A dollar sign is printed in the upper-right corner of the note; the amount ''19.19'' is written adjacent to it. The phrase ''Funded Dec 28 39'' is written vertically across the face of the note. The following imprint appears in the lower-left corner: Intelligencer Office, Houston. The note is signed on the recto by James Wright Simmons, Comptroller, and Burchard Miller, acting Second Auditor. It is endorsed on the verso by Charles Hoffman, McKinney Williams. Simmons was comptroller of the Republic of Texas from 1839-1840, treasurer from 1840-1841, a newspaper and magazine contributor, and author of three volumes of poetry (TSHA). In addition to being acting second auditor of the Republic, Miller, along with Henry Francis Fisher and Joseph Baker, petitioned President Sam Houston for a land grant between the Llano and Colorado Rivers; the grant became know as the Fisher-Miller Land Grant (The Papers of Mirabeau B. Lamar and TSHA). McKinney, Williams and Company was a mercantile business established by Thomas F. McKinney and Samuel M. Williams in 1834 that controlled much of the cotton trade in Houston and Galveston (TSHA). It also issued currency notes during the Texas Revolution, and its two proprietors advanced the Republic more than $150,000.00 (TSHA).
