Notes	This audited draft was issued in Houston by the Republic of Texas. Houston was established in 1836 to replace Harrisburg, which had been burned by Santa Anna. Named after Sam Houston, it was the seat of government from April 19, 1837, to January 18, 1840. Five rows of printer designs decorate the left side of the note. A single line borders the top and bottom edge of the note. The abbreviation ''No.'' is printed in the upper-left corner; the number ''3091'' is handwritten adjacent to it. A dollar sign is printed in the upper-right corner of the note; the amount ''68.25'' is written adjacent to it. The word ''Cancelled'' is written twice vertically across the face of the note. The following imprint appears in the lower-left corner: Intelligencer Office, Houston. The note is signed on the recto by James B. Shaw, acting Comptroller, and Burchard Miller, acting Second Auditor. It is endorsed on the verso by K. H. Douglass. Shaw was comptroller from 1839-1859, was often acting secretary of the treasury during Sam Houston's second administration, and represented Texas in Washington D.C. in 1850 to collect $5,000,000.00 from the government as payment from the Compromise of 1850 and the sale by Texas of parts of News Mexico and Colorado (TSHA). In addition to being acting second auditor of the Republic, Miller, along with Henry Francis Fisher and Joseph Baker, petitioned President Sam Houston for a land grant between the Llano and Colorado Rivers; the grant became know as the Fisher-Miller Land Grant (The Papers of Mirabeau B. Lamar and TSHA). Douglass is possibly Kelsey Harris Douglass, a Nacogdoches merchant and representative to the House of the Second Congress of the Republic of Texas between 1837-1838 (TSHA).
