Andrew
Ponton
(1804-1850)
was a
native
of
Virginia
who
arrived
in
Texas
in
December
1829
and
received
a
land
title
on
June
18
,
1832
. He
served
as the
last
alcalde
of
Gonzales
,
elected
to that
position
in
1835
. A
member
of the
Gonzales
Committee
of
Safety
, he
participated
in the
Battle
of
Gonzales
.
After
the
Revolution
, he
served
as the
first
judge
of the
town
, was a
representative
of
Gonzales
County
in the
Republic
of
Texas
legislature
, and
served
as the
first
chief
justice
of
Lavaca
County
.
Mathew
Caldwell
(1798-1842)
has been
called
''Old
Paint''
for his
spotted
whiskers
and
''the
Paul
Revere
of the
Texas
Revolution''
for his
activities
as a
courier
during
that
conflict
. A
delegate
from
Gonzales
and
signer
of the
Texas
Declaration
of
Independence
,
Caldwell
participated
in the
Council
House
Fight
and the
Battle
of
Plum
Creek
in
1840
and
commanded
Texan
forces
at the
battle
of
Saldo
Creek
in
1841
.
John
Wyatt
Moody
was
auditor
of the
Army
of the
Republic
of
Texas
.
