Notes	This private scrip was issued in Brownsville by the Rio Grande Soldiers' Fund. The note is printed in blue ink. An arched decorative design borders the left side of the note; adjacent to the design are the words ''DEPOSIT CHECK.'' The amount ''25 CTS.'' is printed in the upper-left and upper-right corners of the note. In the upper-center of the note is printed the following phrase in italics in a simple typeface: ''RIO GRANDE SOLDIERS' FUND''; the phrase ''TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS ON DEPOSIT.'' is printed in bold in a sans serif font beneath. The next line states, ''Good for TWO BITS. -- Redeemable... at... J R Palmer's Office in Brownsville, Texas.'' The abbreviation ''No.'' is printed within a ruled-line parallelogram in the lower-left corner of the note; the number ''93'' is handwritten adjacent to it. Charles Stillman, originally of Connecticut, was a Brownsville entrepreneur and businessman. His interests included cotton brokerage; real estate firms; silver and lead mines and textile factories in northern Mexico; merchandise outlets; a shipping company for passengers and goods; and an off-loading, warehousing, and transportation company. During the Mexican War he partnered with Richard King and Mifflin Kenedy in the military transport business and was later a partner in Kenedy's steamboat company. His purchase of lands from a branch of the Cavazos family led to the Juan Cortina range war. Stillman profited greatly from the Civil War; by the end of it, he was one of the richest men in America. See Handbook of Texas Online, s.v. ''STILLMAN, CHARLES.'' The 1860 census for 3rd Ward, Brownsville, Cameron County, Texas, M653, roll 1289, p. 288, line 26, lists J. R. Palmer as a 46-year-old merchant, originally from Connecticut, with real estate valued at $5,000 and personal property worth $15,000. BC-387.
