Notes	This county scrip was issued in Brownwood by Brown County. A fancy, diamond design with decorative stars within roundels and acanthus leaves borders the left side of the note; the amount ''$1.00'' is printed within it. The diamond border continues around the remaining edges of the note. The abbreviation ''No.'' is printed in the upper-left corner; the number ''3111'' is handwritten adjacent to it. The words ''BROWN COUNTY SCRIP.'' are printed in bold across the top of the note. Beneath them the city, Brownwood, is printed, as is the date, July 1863. The phrase ''THE TREASURER OF BROWN COUNTY'' appears across the face of the note in a Victorian-style font. Underneath the phrase, ''ONE DOLLAR'' is printed in a bold, black, shadow-case Victorian-type font. In the upper-right corner, the amount ''1.00'' appears in a fancy shadow-case outline font. The note is signed by the Chief Justice, Greenleaf Fisk. Fisk was an early Texas pioneer and veteran of San Jacinto. He first moved to Brown County in 1860, and between 1862 and the mid-1870s served variously as county judge, justice of the peace, county surveyor, district clerk, county clerk, and county treasurer. Before this he had served in the legislature of the Republic of Texas as a representative from Bastrop County as well as chief justice of that county. See Handbook of Texas Online, s.v. ''FISK, GREENLEAF.'' The 1860 census for Brownwood P.O., Brown County, Texas, M653, roll 1289, p. 103, line 10, lists Fisk as ''Greenleaf Frisk,'' a 50-year-old stock raiser.
