Vignette	(U.C.): Wharf scene with early 0-4-0 locomotive without cab pulling tender, two flat cars with cotton bales, and a passenger coach. Beyond are two large river steamboats, one with lone star flag with stripes. (R): Circular maritime scene with square-rigged three-masted sailing ship with another behind. Above and below are oval roundels, each word ''Five'' in all caps.
Notes	This private scrip was issued in Brazoria by R. & D.G. MILLS & CO. Along the left side of the note, the amount, ''FIVE'' is spelled out in all caps in a shadow case, outline-type font, within a rectangular border. The upper-center of the note depicts a train. The number ''5'' appears to the left and right of the vignette in an oval design; the number ''99'' is handwritten adjacent to the number ''5.'' Below the train vignette is the following: ''Three days after date We promise to pay J M Westervelt or order at the Office of William Prehn & Co in New Orleans or at our Office in Brazoria the sum of Five Dollars....'' Three designs appear along the right border of the note: In the center is a sailing ship; above and below this vignette the number ''FIVE'' is printed within an oval roundel in all caps and a shadow case, outline font. The plate designation ''E'' appears in the upper-left and -right corners of the note. The first two digits that comprise the year are printed; the last two as well as the day and month are handwritten. The note is signed on the recto by R. & D.G. Mills. It is endorsed on the verso by Stephen M. Westervelt. Robert and David Graham Mills were among the wealthiest men in the Republic of Texas and the entire southern U.S. by the time of the Civil War. Robert Mills was a merchant, cotton commission agent, and banker. David Mills owned one of the largest plantations in Brazoria. They owned steamboats, ships, and had railroad assets as well, hence the images on their private scrip (TSHA). The 1860 census for Columbia, Brazoria County, M653, roll 1289, p. 54, line 27, lists D.G. Mills as a 46-year-old planter born in Kentucky who had real estate valued at $364,234.00 and personal property worth $2,500.00. According to the Culpepper Archives of Brazoria County, ''David G. Mills alone lost 313 slaves as a result of emancipation.'' Stephen M. Westervelt is buried in the Old Town Cemetery of Brazoria. He was born in 1819. He married Martha Stewart Dec. 14, 1847 in Brazoria County and he died Tuesday, January 15, 1850. See ''Roberts' & Smiths' in Texas History (Linda and David's Texas Ancestor Site).
