Vignette	(L) Spanish Coin 2 Reales ''ME'' [Mint Mark] ''I J'' [Assayer] (U.C.): Side-wheeler river steamboat with multiple decks, pilot house, and two smokestacks, with U.S. flag at stern. (R): early 4-2-0 locomotive without cab pulling tender and one passenger car. Barrels and cotton bales in foreground.
Notes	This private scrip was issued in Brazoria by R. & D.G. MILLS & CO. Along the left side of the note, the number ''25'' is printed in a rectangle over the vignette of a Spanish coin; the word ''CENTS'' is printed in all caps and shadow case, outline letters below the vignette. A side-wheeler appears in the upper-center of the note; the number ''25'' is printed in an oval on both sides of this vignette. Beneath this, ''R. & D. G. Mills'' is printed in a fancy, bold Victorian-style font, followed by, ''We Promise to pay to S M Westervelt or bearer... at our Office at Brazoria, Brazoria, Texas.'' Along the right side of the note, a vignette of a train with cotton bales in foreground is depicted. The phrase ''Redeemable in Sums of Five Dollars'' is printed above the train vignette; below it the word ''CENTS'' appears within a rectangle in all caps and a shadow case, outline font. The plate designation ''B'' is in the upper-left and -right of the note. The abbreviation, ''No.'' in printed along the top of the note; the number ''135'' is handwritten next to it. The imprint ''Rawden, Wright Hatch & Edson, New Orleans'' is located along the bottom of the note. The first three digits that comprise the year, 184, are printed; the last digit is handwritten, as are the day and month. Robert and David G. Mills were among the wealthiest men in the Republic of Texas and the entire southern U.S. by the time of the Civil War. Robert Mills was a merchant, cotton commission agent, and banker. David G. Mills owned one of the largest plantations in Brazoria. They owned steamboats, ships, and had railroad assets as well, hence the images on their private scrip. See Handbook of Texas Online, s. v. ''MILLS, ROBERT.'' The 1860 census for Columbia, Brazoria County, M653, roll 1289, p. 54, line 27, lists D.G. Mills as a 46-year-old planter, born in Kentucky, with real estate valued at $364,234.00 and personal property worth $2500.00. Stephen M. Westervelt is buried in the Old Town Cemetery of Brazoria. He was born in 1819. He married Martha Stewart Dec. 14, 1847, in Brazoria County, and he died Tuesday, January 15, 1850. See ''Roberts' & Smiths' in Texas History (Linda and David's Texas Ancestor Site). The 1860 census for Columbia Brazoria County, M653, roll 1289, p. 70, line 12, lists Jas. Westervelt as a 38-year-old carpenter, born in New York, with real estate valued at $1500 and personal property of $300. The same census (p. 61, line 17) lists C.H. Westervelt as a 19-year-old clerk, also from New York, living with merchant C. Wilkes. Stephen's widow is listed (p. 79, line 12f) as 39-year-old Martha Westervelt, a native of Kentucky, with four children and real estate worth $1080 and personal property worth $2500.
