Notes	This county scrip was issued in Brazoria by Brazoria County. The left side of the note depicts a vignette of barrels, bundled crops, and a scythe within a cartouche that bears the phrase, ''By Authority of the County Court,'' in all caps, around a seal. Beneath this scene the following phrase appears: ''This Bond is receivable for all County Taxes for 1861-'62.'' ''The County of Brazoria'' is printed in all caps in a simple, sans serif font. The word ''FIVE'' is overprinted in red in a fancy Victorian-style font across the face of the note; ''Brazoria County Treasury Bond'' is overprinted in a blue-green ink, also in a fancy Victorian-style font across the center. The abbreviation, ''No.'' in printed upon a scroll or banner in the upper-right corner; the number ''181'' is handwritten next to it. Three designs appear along the right border of the note: In the center is a bust of George Washington; the amount ''FIVE'' is printed in green over a black number ''5'' on a red roundel above Washington; and the designation ''V'' is printed in green over another red roundel below the bust. The date, January 1, 1862, is printed. The note is signed on the recto by C.R. Cox, County Clerk, and Stephen W. Perkins, Chief Justice. The 1860 census for Columbia, Brazoria County, Texas, M653, roll 1289, p. 58, lines 2f, lists C. R. Cox, age 32, county clerk and a native of Kentucky with real estate valued at $1000 and personal property of $5000. Additionally, Cox was appointed sheriff on May 12, 1877 by the Commissioner's Court and served until November 5, 1878 (History of Brazoria Country Sheriff's Office). Perkins was a politician who served in the Ninth Congress of the Republic of Texas, the House of the First Legislature of the state of Texas, the state Senate, and chief justice of Brazoria County (TSHA).
