Vignette	(L): Three-masted, square-rigged sailing ship with bull's-eye roundels above and below. (U.C.): Maritime scene, framed within an elaborate oval escutcheon, showing, at left: a two-masted square-rigged sailing ship; in the center, a steamship with two-smokestacks and two-masts; and, at right, a small sailboat.
Notes	This county scrip was issued in Brazoria by Brazoria County. The left side of the note depicts a vignette of a sailing ship; beneath it the following phrase appears: ''By Authority of the County Court.'' Another vignette of sailing ships is printed in the upper-center of the note. On both sides of this vignette, the abbreviation, ''No.'' is printed; the number ''1592'' is handwritten next to each. Beneath this center vignette, the words, ''The County of Brazoria'' appear in a simple Gothic font; the phrase, ''Will pay to Bearer,'' is printed in a smaller, but more decorative Gothic font. The note amount is spelled out in all caps and a fancy, shadow case, outline Victorian-style font. The number ''1'' is printed in a fancy rectangular frame along the right side of the note; the word ''ONE'' is below in a fancy, shadow case, outline Victorian type font. On the verso of the note, the words, ''BRAZORIA COUNTY TREASURY BOND'' are printed in green ink; the word, ''ONE'' is printed in red and green. The note is signed on the recto by C.R. Cox, County Clerk, and Stephen W. Perkins, Chief Justice. The 1860 census for Columbia, Brazoria County, Texas, M653, roll 1289, p. 58, lines 2f, lists C. R. Cox, age 32, county clerk and a native of Kentucky with real estate valued at $1000 and personal property of $5000. Additionally, Cox was appointed sheriff on May 12, 1877 by the Commissioner's Court and served until November 5, 1878 (History of Brazoria Country Sheriff's Office). Perkins was a politician who served in the Ninth Congress of the Republic of Texas, the House of the First Legislature of the state of Texas, the state Senate, and chief justice of Brazoria County (TSHA).
