Notes	This county scrip was issued in Boston by Bowie County. Along the left side of the note, the phrase ''Receivable for Special Tax.'' is printed in a fancy border along with the letter ''J'' and numerals 0, 2, 2, 5, and 7, which are facing in various directions. The words ''BOWIE COUNTY'' are printed in all caps and a fancy Victorian font in the upper-center of the note. Underneath an eagle appears; the amount ''$3'' is printed on both sides of eagle vignette. The words ''THREE DOLLARS'' are in all caps and a fancy Victorian font below the vignette. Along the right side of the note is a border of calligraphic printer designs. The abbreviation ''No.'' appears along the center-right edge of the note. The date, ''March 2d, 1863,'' is printed along the bottom left. The note is signed on the recto by P. M. Duke, County Clerk of Bowie County, and John W. Leigh, Chief Justice of Bowie County. The 1860 census for Boston, Bowie County, Texas, M653, roll 1289, p. 8, lines 6f, lists John W. Leigh as a 47-year-old merchant and farmer, born in Virginia, with real estate valued at $12,500 and personal property worth $36,000. He and his presumed wife, age 42, had seven dependents, presumably sons and daughters, living with them, ages 5-20. Living next door to them was Wm. G. P. Leigh, a 23-year-old merchant clerk, a native of Alabama, and his family. The same census, p. 8, line 2f, lists P. M. Duke, 44, county clerk, born in Tennessee, with four dependants, ages 8-16, all born in Alabama.
