Notes	This audited draft was issued in Austin by the Republic of Texas. Austin was the capitol of the Republic from January 19, 1840, until September 1842 and from June 1945 to the present. Although this draft is dated late in 1839, the capitol was not officially moved from Houston until January 1840. Double lines border the left edge of the note. The abbreviation ''No.'' is printed towards the upper-left corner of the note; the number ''11222'' is handwritten adjacent to it. A dollar sign is printed towards the upper-right corner; the amount ''32.26'' is handwritten adjacent to it. A script-style font is used for the following phrase: The Treasurer of the Republic of Texas.... The month, day, and last two digits of the year, 39, are handwritten on the note; the first two digits of the year, 18, are printed. The note is signed on the recto by James B. Shaw, acting Comptroller, and Charles Mason, 1st Auditor. Shaw was comptroller from 1839-1859, was often acting secretary of the treasury during Sam Houston's second administration, and represented Texas in Washington D. C. in 1850 to collect $5,000,000.00 from the government as payment from the Compromise of 1850 and the sale by Texas of parts of News Mexico and Colorado (TSHA). Mason fought in the Battles of Bexar and San Jacinto and received 640 acres of land for his service (Old Gonzalez Eighteen). In addition he was chief clerk for the secretary of war in 1837, was appointed first auditor of the Republic in 1839 by President Lamar, and was acting secretary of war from 1838-1839 (Old Gonzalez Eighteen). The following phrase is written on the note's verso: T. Pillsbury for Anson Jones atty. Timothy Pillsbury, a Massachusetts native, was a Brazoria County politician, serving in the House and Senate during the Republic years and as the county's chief justice and probate judge (TSHA). He was elected by the Texas Legislature to the United States House of Representatives and served from 1846 to 1849. Jones, also originally from Massachusetts, was a doctor, congressman, and the last president of the Republic. (Ibid.). In addition he helped established the first Masonic lodge in Texas, was a charter member and vice president of the Philosophical Society of Texas, and helped establish the first medical society in the state (Ibid.).
