Description |
Ida Lewis Yacht Club, originally Lime Rock Light and then Ida Lewis Rock Light, was built in 1857 on Lime Rock in Newport Harbor to replace its predecessor, a small stone tower and light which had been erected in 1853. Located about 900 yards from shore and accessible only by boat, the structure served as both a navigational light and the lighthouse keeper's home. The first keeper, Hosea Lewis, served from 1853 until 1857, when he suffered a debilitating stroke. Assisted by their daughter, Idawalley Zoradia (Ida) Lewis Wilson, Mr. Lewis's wife assumed the keeper's duties. Ida served as the primary keeper for many years prior to her official tenure, which lasted from 1879 until her death. She is credited with having saved 18 lives, although the number may be as high as 35. During her lifetime, Ida attained national celebrity and received numerous honors and awards for her courage and accomplishments. In 1924, the Rhode Island legislature honored Ida by changing the name of Lime Rock to Ida Lewis Rock. The buildings were sold in 1928. At the time of this photograph, the lighthouse had become the Ida Lewis Yacht Club, and a walkway connecting it to land had been added.
