Description
Hopedene (43 Cliff Avenue) was built in 1889-1902 by architectural firm Peabody and Stearns for Mrs. E. H. G. (Elizabeth Hope) Slater , who owned the estate at the time this photograph was taken. Beatrix Ferrand was the landscape designer. Hopedene is located on the Cliff Walk overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. In 1913 the Georgian Revival-style mansion was enlarged and renovated by architect and interior designer Ogden Codman , Jr. The estate's next owner was New York antiques dealer Charles P. Patterson , who willed it to the Preservation Society of Newport County. In 1983 Britty Cudlip purchased Hopedene from the Preservation Society ; she later (ca. 1998-1999) sold the estate to its current (2012) owners , entrepreneur and businessman Craig J. Millard and his wife.
