Description |
Rosecliff (548 Bellevue Avenue) was built in 1899-1902 by architect Stanford White for businessman and shipping magnate Hermann Oelrichs and his wife. The estate was comprised of properties located along Bellevue Avenue which had been acquired throughout the 1890s. The palatial, four-story Oelrichs villa replaced the wooden house located on the first of these, purchased in 1891 from historian, diplomat, and rose fancier George Bancroft and was called Rosecliff. The new mansion, patterned after the Grand Trianon at Versailles was the site of many lavish parties hosted by Mrs. Oelrichs, who had commissioned its design. Following Mrs. Oelrichs's death, Rosecliff passed to her son, Hermann Oelrichs, Jr.; he lived there with his wife until he sold the estate in 1941. Rosecliff's last private owners, Mr. and Mrs. J. Edgar Monroe of New Orleans, purchased the estate in 1947; in 1972 they donated the house and its furnishings to the Preservation Society of Newport County.
