Description	Jose Mariano Beristain de Souza (1756-1817) was a Mexican priest, historian and Doctor in Theology.
Notes	Recto: caption: Sr. Dr. Dn. Mariano Beristain y Souza, nacio en Puebla, provincia de Tlaxcala, en 22 de Mayo de 1756 y fallecio en Mexico a 23 de Marzo de 1817. Fue condecorado por S.M. Carlos III con munificiencia y largueza a nombrandolo dignidad de las Metropolitana y cabellero de la orden de Carlos III. A handwritten transcription accompanying the portrait: Sir Mariano Beristain y Souza was born in Puebla, province of Tlaxcala, the 22nd of May 1776 and died in Mexico, March the 22nd 1817. He was decorated by H.M. Charles III with and munificence and plenty. He was named dignitary of the Metropolitan [church] and Knight of the order of Charles III.
