Description	This document is an account of the ceremony of swearing the Texas oath of allegiance to the Empire of Mexico under Emperor Agustin de Iturbide (1783-1824) by the "Presidio de la Bahia del Espiritu Santa." It states that on October 3, 1822 political officials, military men and ecclesiastics gathered together in the sala of the Presidio in compliance with the imperial decree and there swore allegiance to the monarchy after the form used in swearing allegiance to the kings of Spain. The occasion was solemnized with a Mass of thanksgiving and the Te Deum was sung afterward. At the conclusion of the proclaimation of loyalty, salvos were fired from cannon and firearms, and there was general rejoicing. The signatures of ten people including Juan Jose Hernandez, Tomas Munguia, Francisco Cadena, Manuel Becerera, and Jose Antonio Valdez are included. The document is in Valdez's hand; he was secretary of the recently formed "junta gubernativa."
