Description
The fury of the volcanic eruption of Mt . Vesuvius was more apparent at night when lava flow could nearly always be seen , a pattern of outcroppings that changed nightly . Here the front is advancing towards Naples . This flow occurred irregularly over two or three days , and the odor was easily detected from as far as 50 miles . Military personnel were warned to keep away , which , of course , made getting close to the eruptive material all the more attractive . Military personnel and vehicles did however rescue and move the population of entire towns during this eruption and many military vehicles were trapped and consumed in the lava flows while attempting to do so . Also, a few vehicles were trapped and consumed while soldiers were getting as close as possible to see the sights up close . I am not aware of any soldier being killed or wounded in this endeavor but some of us were mighty scared .
