Description
A view of the harbor at Naples with Mt . Vesuvius in the background . A truly beautiful city , Naples was a nice retreat from assignments in the forward areas . This photo was made after the massive eruption of Vesuvius and clearly shows the newly formed top of the mountain . [paragraph] Even during the war the city was a thriving and busy place . Italy had surrendered on September 8 , 1943 and the Italians were warm and friendly towards the US soldiers . It was a common experience to be stopped on the street and asked : "Did you know my Uncle Pietra , he live in Brooklyn but I forgot his address but thought you probably knew him, he very big man ". I would always ask , "He Mafioso? " to which the answer usually was, "Yeah , he big. "
