Place	New Orleans, Louisiana
Description	Portrait of Major General Samuel Bell Maxey (1825-1895), as second lieutenant, 7th Infantry Regiment, U.S. Army. This is the earliest known photographic likeness of Maxey, who sat for the portrait in New Orleans while en route to serve with the U.S. Infantry in the Mexican War. The daguerreotype was made by James Maguire, one of New Orleans’ pioneer photographers, and is previously unpublished. During the American Civil War Maxey served in the Confederate States Army and was promoted to major general. He later became an important political figure in Texas and served two terms as a U.S. Senator during the 1880s. Source: Lawrence T. Jones III.
