[Handwritten]
[?1765?]
[Address
panel:]
To
Mrs
Wadsworth
at the
Honble
Mrs
Carteret’s
in
St
James
place
London
[1765?]
My
d[ea]r
Friend
I
could
have
wept
over
your
kind
&
tender
letter
this
morning
.
Lord
help
poor
me
for
being
an
instrument
of
torment
to
one
I
feel
ready
to
fly
any
where
to
comfort
or
relieve
for a
moment
.
O
!
I
don’t
wonder
at
your
burden
since
you
went
.
I
bear
mine
so
much
that
yesterday
&
to
day
I
am
__________
almost
to
death
.
Your
letter
explain’d
why
I
did
suffer
&
so
patiently
to
endure
to the
end
must
be
our
point
.
It
is
the
Lord’s
burden
for these
who
will not
either
feel
or
see
their
own
danger
. By
privet
[private]
letters
I
find
matters
are
very
bad
indeed
, in the
opinion
of
all
. This
violence
being
used
what
may
snatch
him
out
of the
burning
&
the[n]
you
suffer
.
I
am
sure
you
will be
glad—as
soon
as
I
had
your
letter
I
sent
away
to
Mr
Andrews
a
special
messenger
last
night’s
post
carried
[p
.
2]
rather
a
doubtfull
answer
to
Mr
M---
About
Mr
Andrews
as
I
was to have
sent
it
by the
Cross
Post
but this
gives
time
enough
for
all
things
.
Yet
my
dearest
Mrs
Wadsworth
there
is
a
something
in
Mr
M---‘s
letter
to
me
that has
still
some
of the
sham
in
it
,
&
seeing
thro
this
I
left
it
a
little
open
but
my
letter
to
day
that
goes
by the
same
Lady
this
does
,
is
a
kind
of
certain
Invitation
&
do
tell
him
things
will be
worse
then
ever
if he
disappoints
her
now
by to
morrow’s
post
I
shall
send
Andrews
positive
answer
&
that
according
to His
promise
must
be to
set
out
forthwith
. Then
must
be an
extraordinary
something
under
all
this,
either
for
my
punishment
or to
bless
the
work
most
eminently
.
Hoping
against
hope
was
Abraham’s
honour
.
I
am
sure
it
must
be
mine
in this
matter
&
thro
this
I
yet
faint
not. On
Wednesday
you
may
depend
upon
a
letter
directed
as this
is
which
will be
[sufficient?]
time
for
you
to
make
your
attack
.
Your
sentiments
makes
me
[p
.
3]
thus
active
.
Otherwise
I
should
yet
stand
still
.
O
! the
multitudes
that would
scarce
take
a
denial
at the
Chappel
door
this
morning
would have
grieved
you
to
see
turn
back
.
Till
Mr
M---
is
in
Bath
I
will not
give
him
out
if the
power
of
darkness
can
hinder
he will not
even
come
now
.
Indeed
I
suffer
allways
but the
cross
shall
ever
lead
to the
crown
is
my
constant
faith
&
maxim
.
I
am
in
great
pain
for
your
health
.
I
am
glad
you
are to be with
my
two
d[ea]r
friends
so
much
. They are
truly
the
excellent
of the
earth
.
They[?]
will
feel
for
you
&
with
you
&
can
be
[a]
comfort
to
you
.
I
am
sure
d[ea]r
Mr
Whitfield
would
say
joy
[
?
Meaning
“rejoice”?]
over
you
.
It
is
just
such
hearts
he
wants
more
here of for his
master
.
Without
fail
write
on
Wednesday
night
whether
Mr
M---
comes
or not.
I
have had
some
conversation
with
some
of the
better
sort
&
with
one
clergyman
that
promise
all
well
&
the
awakened
souls
we
are
looking
after
with
all
diligence
. As
I
write
by
tomorrow’s
post
again
I
can
only
add
I
expect
my
d[ea]r
Mr
Townsend
to
morrow
&
that
you
will
believe
all
here
&
my
self
most
_______
your
ever
&
ever
affectionate
friend
