Plain Text Transcription	[Letter 56] [Dec 16, 1765] [Address panel:] To Mrs Wadsworth at the Revd Mr Townsend’s at Pewsey in Wiltshire Turn at Hungerford My dear Friend How have I long'd to write to you & send all the little events of Bath promptly to shew you how much I love you & miss you in all the adventures of my adventurous estate. I have also wanted to tell d[ea]r Calab how I love & thank him & what a sweet impression he left upon my heart by the kindest taking leve [sic] here the last morning according to custom. On Sunday morning after the sacrament Mr Howel Davi[e]s palpitations of various kind. In this up starts poor Shephard & sayes if you will send to my church I will not let the chappel be be[sic] shut up. With down cast looks I came out of the chappel, Wills following me. Madam, Mr Shepard will preach if you give him leave, "but how do I know the people will like him in this ___________. Up comes Mrs B__________ [p. 2] and sayes don't let the chappel be shut up; let him preach at eleven. Shepard stood forth, the chappel full. I did nothing but sweat & pray. He did acquit himself well. Still better in the afternoon & on Monday morning comes the sweetest most broken-hearted sinner smote under the morning sermon I ever saw & so smote that she said she past in trembling thro the streets lest her distress being so great should expose her. Thus where man distresses God chuses. Last night a better sermon still & such an attentive that I think it appears a providence that d[ea]r Davi[e]s did not come. Tomorrow we do certainly expect him from Bristol. To satisfie you, that you bring no trials with you, I must tell you this whole week has been one constant scene. Howel [Harris] does not mend matters as his heart is so deeply attached the B-----. I have not a creature to speak to & I believe not, less enmity against you, your brother & myself than has been. R ____ sent for Harris to tell him how much he loved me, & owned[?] what his wish desired about Lady Ann, that she [p. 3] had said she sold the tickets. This was I suppose to make peace. I had sent Mrs Edwin word. Thus as matters stood, I could not wait upon her. She is angry but this is better than her being pleas'd. Miss Leighton is sentineet [?] out of the meetings. Brandon is come down & did promise the poor creature a lodging which she will very soon have now in the grave. Mr & Mrs Smith come on amazingly & I love them very much. Tell my d[ea]r Calab that I shall richen[?] on the three weeks end & I think you can't do less than see him safe over as you have your chaise. I wish you would feel this as Monday as my heart wants you should & that Bath is a house you pine a little after. I shall long to hear Jos[eph] that the stomach & open infirmtys of d[ea]r Calab was fever or better & that Bath waters might have fair play. I know you are so good to me. If I could have wrote sooner you would not let me [be] so burdened so low, so traped[?] & that altogether. Last Sunday they played me off at the Abb[e]y with a violence before the Corporation that if the mob would pull my house down the noble body incorporate could not I suppose in their hearts blame them [p. 4 (along address panel)] but all this while such good news as comes then multitudes will join us & the great stir. All this makes me lay my neck under the cross. Pray for us. I feel I want it so much for every thing that if I had the heart of ten thousand I want it all to stay up my poor spirits.
