My
d[ea)r
Friends
Your
kind
letter
follow'd
from
Bath
to this
place
where
by the
wise
providences
of
God
I
yet
own[?]
a
severe
relapse
of
my
illness
with the
inclemency
of the
weather
for
travelling
has been the
visible
cause
of
my
continuence
&
to
your
affec[tiona]t[e]
concern
for
my
better
health
.
I
can
assure
you
that this
last
week
has
so
raised
me
that for
now
near
one
whole
year
I
have not
found
myself
so
sensibly
better
in
thoughts
&
spirits
.
I
can't
but
think
the
Lord
has
shewn
his
own
arm
in this
matter
&
in
answer
to
yours
&
my
other
precious
friends[']
prayers
.
May
his
mercy
enable
my
few
remaining
evil
days
to be
fitted
with
labours
to his
praise
&
be an
afforded
comfort
to
such
whose
love
would
yet
for a
small
moment
redeem
me
from the
grave
. The
fears
of not
being
thus
by
surviving
my
late
fatherly
corrections
renders
every
view
of
longer
life
an
humbling
object
to
me
.
O
!
it
is
well
all
power
in
heaven
&
in
earth
are in the
hands
of the
almighty
Saviour
whose
love
is
as
great
as his
Omnipotence
.
Our
hearts
fainted
when
(mine
in
particular)
read
your
resolutions
of not
being
at
Bath
so
soon
as
I
[p
.
2]
I
wisht
to have
you
there.
Mr
Wills
seems
to have his
heart
more
drawn
out
to the
Bristol
Chapel
that
it
cannot
interfere
in the
least
with his
ministry
&
perhapps
a
time
is
coming
when
such
testimoneys
unitedly
borne
may
have a
wise
&
gracious
meaning
.
Xmas
our
fine
people
(as
at the
recess
of
Parliament)
have
idle
time
for
Bath
&
that
being
a
good
time
(as
they
term
it)
may
be a
waiting
time
for us to be
ever
usefull
but
may
the
Lord
who
is
the
wise
&
teaching
prophet
of his
servants
direct
your
gracious
soul
most
for his
praise
&
your
comfort
.
Many
things
unite
to
make
me
suppose
my
way
must
be to
London
when
my
health
&
strength
is
sufficient
to
follow
my
summons
there. The
work
spreads
greatly
.
Maidstone
Chapel
is
opened
&
a
great
prospect
of
wonderfull
success
attends
it
&
in
consequence
of this
eighteen
miles
arround
gather
for to
hear
&
so
more
openings
will
follow
.
Our
friend
we
are
so
interested
about
has been
absent
on a
visit
to his
sister
.
One
hour
only
we
have
spent
together
since
I
last
wrote
&
this
too
much
mixt
to
judge
of
effects
. He
is
a
very
unhappy
man
at
present
or
I
am
quite
out
in
my
little
penetration
.
It
cannot
be
[p
.
3]
otherwise
. He
is
too
honest
not to be
something
&
he
cannot
be what his
prudence
would
call
the
best
for him
&
that
prayer
that he
puts
up
in
scorn[?]
will
ever
counter
act
all
contrary
views
of
things
.
I
expect
him
often
here
now
he
is
returned
.
O
!
may
the
Lord
enable
me
by
wisdom
&
from that
love
my
heart
bears
to him to
spreak
in that
spirit
that
may
best
bring
the
Lord's
best
purposes
about
for him.
My
d[ea]r
Mrs
Haw[e]is
may
depend
upon
my
observance
of her
kind
injunctions
as
far
as
is
consistent
with
my
possible
observation
of them. The
d[ea]r
Wills
have by a
kind
of an
affe[ctationa]t[e]
violence
restrain'd
me
from
going
to
church
.
I
have but
twice
been
within
the
walls
&
tho
well
able
yesterday
no
intreating
could
engage
their
consent
.
I
mention
this to
shew
my
preference
to
my
kind
friends[']
will to that of
my
own
. The
influenza
that
is
now
so
epidemical
makes
them
urge
my
present
longer
stay
&
as at
Bristol
it
is
the
more
terribly[?]
universal
.
Mr
Shirley
&
Mr
Glascott
both
lay’d
up
at
Mr
Ireland's
.
Nevertheless[?]
I
am
the
Lord's
poor
waiting
servant
&
ready
one
even
to
meet
that or any
thing
else
if he
calls
.
[p
.
4
(across
address
panel)]
I
will with the
Lord's
leave
write
upon
the
road
to
tell[?]
you
I
when
I
leave
this
place
as
I
shall
much
wish
to
see
&
speak
with
you
&
communicate
a
new
________
matter
relative
to a
principle
labourer
in
God's
church
&
think
I
am
lately
informed
of
&
when
wisdom
&
caution
&
with
divine
charity
only
can
sufficiently
serve
&
only
known
to a
very
few
but
I
undeniably
true
.
I
am
in
great
truth
of
affection
my
d[ea]r
Friends

aff[ectiona]t[e]
