[Address
panel:]
To The
Revd
Mr
Haw[e]is
at
Aldwinkle
near
Thrapston
Northamptonshire
[Written
across
the
address
panel:]
“Mr
Phillips
begs
all
that
is
most
kind.”
My
very
dear
Friends
After
reading
your
letter
with
no
small
feelings
of
great
distress
for the
poor
blind
world's
loss
, as
well
as
all
our
dear
Bath
friends'
disappointment
, the
Lord
has
inclined
honest
Jones'
heart
to
serve
as
master
here for
4
months
&
Phillips
for
you
became
released
for that
one[?]
time
.
Nothing
but
yourselves
could
from a
sense
of
love
&
gratitude
have
made
me
hear
of this for
one
moment
. The
loss
of him here
being
so
very
great
&
indeed
himself
only
satisfied
by
Jones'
willingly
engaging
who
is
so
much
to be
relied
upon
. His
hopes
of
ordination
after
that
time
obliges
me
to
expect
Mr
Phillips
back
by that
time
. With the
Lord's
leave
you
may
depend
upon
Mr
Phillips
being
at
Aldwinkle
on the
9th
of
Nober
so
that
could
you
get
a
supplie
for to be at
Bath
by the
2d
you
might
catch
some
of the
fine
world
before
this
autumn
season
is
over
or the
Parliament
meets
which
is
a
charity
greater
than to the
colliers
,
&c
.
It
is
amazing
to
think
how they
croud
to
Bright
[helmstone]
&
Tunbridge
Chapels
&
would
more
abundantly
to
Bath
if
you
are there.
Sheppard
may
preach
in the
week
days
&
give
the
sacrament
&
your
labours
be
much
reduced
by that
means
.
My
poor
student
is
like
to
linger
long
&
suffer
much
yet
happy
,
exceedingly
happy
in his
soul
&
begs
to be
gone
.
[p
.
2]
I
wish
you
could
see
Mr
Peckwell
&
Shirley
while
you
are in
town
.
I
think
the
authority
good
who
thus
writes
to
me
, "The
Bishop
of
London
is
determined
to
expel
out
of the
church
all
the
clergy
that
preach
in
licensed
plans
"
[?places]
. This will
commence
I
suppose
on the
meeting
of the
Parliament
&
I
could
wish
to
take
every
step
that
might
engage
caution
.
I
have
hinted
to them this.
Don't
you
say
a
word
you
had
it
from
me
, but
your
consulting
them
upon
it
&
some
general
plan
entered
upon
for the
supplys
of the
chapels
regularly
in
union
with them
might
be of
unspeakable
use
.
Our
Welch
clergy
I
have
approved
of this
&
who
will
act
cautiously
&
help
us with their
whole
hearts
that
could
a
list
of these be
obtain'd
&
successively
engage
services
. These
difficultys
might
be
managed
as
I
am
told
they
don't
mean
to
meddle
with
me
in the
least
therefore
I
must
be
doubly
cautious
in
honour
as
well
as
justly
to the
ministers
that
help
us that
nothing
may
arise
from us.
Mr
Peckwell
has
Tunbridge
Chapel
in his
hands
at
Xmas
.
I
think
a
secret
&
quiet
means
taken
might
make
your
scheme
under
our
present
circumstances
most
desirable
.
May
the
Lord
bless
&
direct
you
.
Mr
Shirley
will be at
Bristol
or at any
time
give
you
help
at
Bath
should
you
feel
it
at any
time
too
much
but by these
means
I
trust
the
Lord
he will
bless
&
carry
you
through
.
O
! a
time
is
coming
that these
privileges
(from
our
cold
dead
&
lukeward
state)
will be
cut
of
[f]
from us. The
professing
church
is
as
bad
in
folly
vanity
&
ignorance
of the
Gospel
as the
world
all
the
godly
souls
are
burdened
[p
.
3]
through
their
professions
but
where
must
we
go
but to him that
we
must
cry
out
to "
spare
thy
people
O
!
Lord
&
give
not
up
thine
heritage
to
destruction.
"
May
ten
thousand
blessings
rest
upon
you
both
in
time
&
for
all
eternity
&
believe
me
my
dear
Friends
as
ever
your
truly
faithfull

The
Lock
&
the
Pantheon--alas
!
alas
! Will be the
objects
of
speedy
discipline
