William
Romaine]
My
dear
Sir
Wishing
to
make
Bath
the
most
agreeable
situation
for
you
,
I
could
not
help
using
that
plainness
an
old
friend
claims
the
liberty
of
when
doubts
make
difficulties
in
friendship
,
&
which
I
know
you
will
readily
allow
me
.
I
must
say
what
you
have
wrote
of
late
&
the
report
of
our
very
strong
expressions
relative
to the
doctrines
of the
Spirit
have
abundantly
griev'd
me
,
viz
.,
your
speaking
much
too
lightly
of the
comforting
influences
of the
Spirit
of
God
,
nay
termed
publicly
such
"
Spiritual
Dram-drinking
"
&
exposing
all
those
divine
means
the
Holy
Ghost
uses
to
fit
&
renew
for a
world
which
only
such
preparations
can
qualify
us for. This
my
dear
Sir
has
deeply
distress'd
me
,
yet
being
not
willing
to
believe
it
the
effects
of a
settled
judgment
but
rather
of
rashness
of
expression
,
&
which
tho'
it
by
no
means
can
be
justified
has
it
relief
from
expectation
by the not
having
adverted
to the
dangerousness
of its
consequences
to
many
.
Thus
I
wish
to
conclude
upon
it
,
ever
praying
you
may
be
found
an
humble
,
faithful
&
experienced
minister
of
Christ
&
which
love
ever
constrains
me
so
to
desire
for
you
.
0
be
cautious
lest
a
day
come
,
lest
a
day
come
when
this
wound
may
be
deeply
felt
in
your
own
soul
.
May
the
blessed
Spirit
of
God
in
all
your
prayers
make
intercession
for
,you
.
May
this
Spirit
of
Truth
inspire
all
your
publick
ministrations
&
bless
,
guide
&
illuminate
&
fully
show
you
effectually
for
yourself
&
[p
.
2]
others
the
Savious'r
glory
.
Thus
you
see
how
little
I
suppose
in
your
best
moments
all
those
consolations
promised
in the
Gospel
could
be
termed
"
Spiritual
Dram-
drinking
which
leaves
all
worse
than
it
finds
them" as also the
witness
God's
Spirit
bears
to
our
regeneration
in
Christ
&
of "those
times
the
Holy
Ghost
has
comforted
his
people
by
meeting
with them.
All
which
you
term
delusion
.
Alas
how
severe
a
charge
brought
by
wise
holy
&
sensible
Christians
against
you
.
Nothing
short
of
such
a
testimony
could
have
given
any
weight
to
ever
a
suspicion
of
your
real
sentiments
.
Thus
denying
the
only
means
of
man's
restoration
by
being
born
of the
Spirit
,
comforted
by the
Spirit
,
renewed
by the
Spirit
,
taught
by the
Spirit
,
led
&
prepared
for
glody
by the
Spirit
,
seems
denying
the
only
grand
fundamental
of
all
gospel
truth
(under
the
great
sacrifice)
for
man's
salvation
.
My
dear
Sir
, as
you
have
given
offence
by this
inca[u]tious
manner
of
speaking
to
many
,
avoid
it
for the
future
for
your
own
soul's
sake
&
also
labour
to
confirm
your
testimony
by a
faithful
adherence
to those
great
truths
at
present
apparently
slighted
by
you
,
&
this
is
but
due
to
God's
people
&
any
who
stand
as his
witnesses
for the
important
message
of
salvation--&
O
how
awfully
terrifying
it
is
to
hear
a
minister
ridicule
[p
.
3]
in the
pulpit
the
only
testimony
truth
bears
to the
divine
record
of
God’s
blessed
word
.
May
the
Lord
Jesus
bless
direct
&
reveal
more
&
more
by this his
blessed
spirit
the
fulness
of
all
wisdom
&
spiritual
understanding
to
you
, a
degree
of this will
make
you
not
only
easily
forgive
but not
less
regard
her
who
from
love
to the
truth
&
faithful
friendship
to
you
is
thus
tenderly
communicating
the
sentiments
of
others
with her
own
friendly
fears
for
your
comfort[?]
&
more
enlarged
usefulness
in
God's
church
&
who
begs
you
ever
to
believe
her
you
?
Faithful
&

Friend
