Summary
Nutrition
probably
concerns
more
people
more
directly
than any
other
sector
of
our
national
war
effort
.
It
concerns
our
armed
forces
. The
old
saying
that
'an
army
marches
on its
stomach'
has
received
the
full
confirmation
of
science
, and
through
the
work
of the
Army
Subsistence
Laboratory
,
all
the
resources
of
science
are
being
applied
to
making
our
soldiers
the
best
fed
army
in the
world
.
It
concerns
the
army
in
overalls
--
the
men
behind
the
men
behind
the
guns
.
Sir
John
Orr
, of the
British
Food
Ministry
,
is
authority
for the
statement
that
'improvement
of the
diet
of
work-men.
..
is
followed
by
increased
output
without
any
conscious
increased
effort.'
It
concerns
our
children
--
the
citizens
of
tomorrow
on
whom
in
large
measure
will
fall
the
great
task
of
building
a
stronger
,
saner
, and
more
enduring
peace
than any the
world
has
yet
known
. The
food
they
eat
today
,
while
they are
young
, will
help
to
give
them the
strength
and
stamina
which
are their
birthright
,
both
now
and for the
future
.
It
concerns
is
all
--
every
man
and
woman
in the
country
. For the
food
we
eat
--
not
only
how
much
but also what
kind
of
food
--
is
,
we
know
now
, a
determining
factor
in
whether
, as
individuals
and as a
Nation
,
we
'can
take
it.'
We
may
not
know
precisely
what this
'it'
will
turn
out
to be in
coming
months
and
years
. But
it
seems
fair
to
predict
that,
whatever
comes
,
we
shall
need
all
the
health
and
courage
we
can
command
to
surmount
the
challenge
of this
war-torn
world
.
Better
nutrition
is
then a
national
need.
.. The
need
is
not
confined
to the
third
of
our
people
who
,
beyond
question
, are
ill-fed
,
nor
to these
plus
the
additional
millions
whose
diet
is
perilously
near
the
margin
of
safety
.
Even
the
25
percent
or
so
of us
who
are
fortunate
enough
to be
reasonably
well
fed
have an
obligation
toward
nutrition
--
to
safeguard
our
own
health
and that of
our
families
; to
join
with
other
people
in
our
home
communities
so
that
everyone
can
share
in the
food
protection
which
we
enjoy
. This
is
possible
; the
United
States
has the
greatest
food
resources
of any
nation
in the
world
.
It
is
not
merely
possible
;
it
is
imperative
. The
task
--
the
immediate
,
urgent
task
--
is
to
utilize
these
food
resources
wisely
so
that they will
yield
the
fullest
possible
health
returns.--p
