Plain Text Transcription
From
[Nathaniel]
Bridges
at
Magdalen
College
Oxford
to
T.H
. at the
Vineyard
Chapel
(opened
by the
Countess
of
Huntingdon
and
Haweis
place
of
residence
during
the
first
half
of
1809)
in
Bath
,
Somerset
. He
wishes
to
know
whether
Mr
[Charles]
Chew
(curate
at
Aldwincle
during
1786-1787
and
again
from
1790)
should
join
Haweis
in
Bath
when
Bridges
travels
to
Wadenhoe
in
Northamptonshire
(Bridges
was the
Rector
of
Wadenhoe
between
1783
and
1792)
or
whether
it
would be
better
for
Chew
to
remain
where
he
is
?
Bridges
does
not
think
that any
end
will be
answered
by them
both
being
together
in the
same
place
and
T.H
. would
probably
find
the
help
valuable
. From the
last
Sunday
in
March
or the
first
in
April
,
Bridges
will be at
liberty
to
take
care
of the
churches
until
next
January
barring
a
few
weeks
in
July
and
August
.
Bridges
must
reside
here
again
for
some
months
. He
thinks
it
proper
to
give
T.H
. his
plan
of
intended
movements
and would be
pleased
to
know
T.H.’s
opinion
regarding
Mr
Chew
so
that
Bridges
can
make
arrangements
for his
new
curate
coming
to
Orlingbury
in
Northamptonshire
.
(Bridges
was the
Rector
of
Orlingbury
between
1783
and
1805)
He has
engaged
an
excellent
assistant
called
[James]
Franks
on the
recommendation
of
Mr
[Thomas]
Robinson
of
Leicester
.
Franks
is
now
officiating
in the
Episcopal
chapel
in
Glasgow
.
Bridges
saw
‘honest’
[Thomas]
Pentycross
the
other
day
-
he
labors
on
most
admirably
and would
suit
T.H’s
chapel
at
Bath
better
than
anyone
else
for he
is
sound
in the
faith
and his
preaching
would be
approved
of by the
Bath
congregation
.
Bridges
wishes
that
T.H
. would
engage
Pentycross
to
cover
for his
absence
. The
Bishop
of
Norwich
is
visiting
Bath
–
Bridges
advised
him to
go
and
avoid
college
disputes
while
he
is
away
. They are
likely
to be
particularly
pressing
at this
time
and the
bishop’s
health
would not
stand
it
. The
bishop
will be
joined
in
Bath
by the
author
Mr
Jones
, a
relation
of
Bridges
.
‘I
fear
neither
of them would
wish
to have the
least
connexion
with
my
good
friend
the
Rector
of
Aldwincle.’
Bridges
feels
friendship
for
Dr
and
Mrs
Walker
–
T.H
.
never
mentions
them. He
hopes
they are
well
. He has
heard
a
disappointing
account
of
Em-
P-
and that there
is
no
improvement
in him for the
better
,
although
he
appears
constant
in his
attendance
on
T.H.’s
ministry
.
T.H
. has
probably
encountered
Bridges’
friend
at
Weston
Rectory
in
Somerset
.
Mr
Macworth
is
a
young
man
‘of
more
reflection
than
usually
falls
to the
lot
of
Oxford
students
, but he has
great
prejudices
. His
wife
seems
more
open
to
conviction
but she
is
too
deeply
engaged
in the
world
to
find
leisure
for
spiritual
concerns.’
Bridges
hopes
to
hear
from
T.H
.
within
the
next
few
days
. His
intention
is
to
visit
Orlingbury
in a
few
weeks
and
remain
with his
people
there as
long
as he
can
until
Mr
Francks
arrives
.
When
Bridges
leaves
Orlingbury
he should be then
free
to
relieve
T.H’s
curate
. If
T.H
. should
need
the
curate’s
help
about
the
beginning
and
middle
of
April
, he
can
invite
him to
Bath
without
fear
of
causing
inconvenience
to
Bridges
.
Does
T.H
.
know
what
time
he will be at
Aldwincle
for the
more
that
Bridges
knows
of his
movements
the
better
? In a
postscript
, he
mentions
that he
must
be in
Oxford
at
about
the
time
of the
election
in
July
.
When
does
T.H
.
think
of
going
to
Aldwincle
and
Brighthelmstone
(antiquated
form
of the
name
Brighton)
in
Sussex
.

Nathaniel
Bridges
(1750-1834)
was the
son
of a
Northamptonshire
clergyman
.
Bridges
was
educated
at
University
College
and
Magdalen
College
Oxford
and was
ordained
into the
Church
of
England
in
1778
. He
served
a
succession
of
parishes
in
Oxfordshire
,
Berkshire
,
Northamptonshire
and
Warwickshire
as
well
as
holding
the
post
of
lecturer
at
St
Nicholas
and
St
Mary
Redcliffe
in
Bristol
for
over
thirty
years
.
Between
1775
and
1783
Bridges
was the
most
influential
evangelical
in
Oxford
.
James
Franks
(1760-1829)
was
born
in
Loughborough
,
Leicestershire
. He was
educated
at
Magdalen
College
Cambridge
and
after
ordination
in
1787
was
appointed
to a
curacy
in
Cambridgeshire
. He
subsequently
served
as
minister
of the
English
chapel
in
Glasgow
and as a
curate
at
Halifax
in
Yorkshire
.
Thomas
Robinson
(1749-1813)
was the
son
of a
hosier
in
Wakefield
,
Yorkshire
.
After
a
short
time
in
business
,
Robinson
entered
Trinity
College
Cambridge
in
1768
and was
elected
fellow
three
years
later
. He
experienced
an
evangelical
conversion
in his
second
year
at
college
and in
1771
became
Curate
at
Witcham
and
Witchford
in the
Isle
of
Ely
.
After
three
years
he
moved
to
Leicester
and in
1778
was
appointed
Vicar
of
Leicester
St
Mary’s
. He also
held
the
positions
of
chaplain
of the
infirmary
, the
Leicester
Volunteer
Infantry
and
Leicester
Gaol
.
Robinson’s
ministry
was
very
much
in the
evangelical
tradition
. He
established
a
benevolent
society
and a
Sunday
School
and
served
as
chairman
of the
local
auxiliary
of the
British
and
Foreign
Bible
Society
. He also
published
a
series
of
tracts
on the
nature
of
God
. His
theological
position
was that of a
moderate
Calvinist
.
Thomas
Pentycross
(1747-1808)
was
born
in
London
, the
son
of a
merchant
. He was
educated
at
Christ’s
Hospital
and
Pembroke
College
Cambridge
.
Pentycross
expressed
doubts
about
the
articles
and
liturgy
of the
Church
of
England
and was
refused
ordination
by the
Archbishop
of
York
in
1770
. For a
short
time
he
itinerated
for a
Baptist
minister
Robert
Robinson
.
Pentycross
was
finally
ordained
in
1771
and
became
Rector
of
Wallingford
in
Berkshire
. He
remained
there
until
his
death
and also
itinerated
for the
Countess
of
Huntingdon
.
