From
[Henry]
Thornton
to
Joseph
Hardcastle
at
Duck’s
Foot
Lane
in
Cannon
Street
,
London
. He
is
returning
the
enclosed
documents
with
thanks
for the
opportunity
to
peruse
them. He has also
sent
the
extracts
from
[Zachary]
Macauley’s
journal
to
[Samuel]
Greatheed
at
Newport
Pagnell
in
Buckinghamshire
to be
forwarded
to
[Andrew]
Fuller
at
Kettering
in
Northamptonshire
. As for the
Foulah
mission
he
is
pleased
that
such
a
plan
is
being
put
into
effect
but
is
afraid
that
unless
the
war
[against
France]
ends
soon
, there will be
too
much
risk
involved
in
missions
as
well
as
many
other
activities
. He
agrees
with
Hardcastle
that they
must
wait
to
hear
from
Macauley
.
[William]
Dawes
who
lives
at
Newtown
Portsmouth
will be a
good
advisor
on the
detail
.

[c.1795]
Henry
Thornton
(1760-1815)
was a
wealthy
banker
and
philanthropist
,
who
gave
away
much
of his
annual
income
to
worthy
causes
. The
son
of a
generous
supporter
of the
early
evangelicals
,
Thornton
carried
on this
tradition
by
serving
as
treasurer
of the
British
and
Foreign
Bible
Society
and the
Society
for
Missions
to
Africa
and the
East
. A
close
friend
of
William
Wilberforce
with
whom
he
shared
a
house
for
five
years
,
Thornton
used
his
position
as
member
of
parliament
for
Southwark
to
promote
anti
slavery
legislation
.
Thornton
was also an
economist
of
note
and
did
much
to
influence
financial
strategy
during
Pitt's
administration
.
Joseph
Hardcastle
(1752-1819)
was
born
in
Leeds
. He
moved
to
London
at the
age
of
fifteen
and
joined
his
uncle
in
business
. A
member
of the
Bury
Street
Independent
Chapel
, he was
very
actively
engaged
in
evangelical
causes
as a
director
of the
Sierra
Leone
Company
from
1791
and
treasurer
of the
LMS
. In
1802
he
accompanied
William
Wilberforce
to
Paris
with a
mind
to
starting
evangelistic
work
there and as a
result
became
involved
in the
British
and
Foreign
and
Bible
Society
Zachary
Macaulay
(1768-1838)
was
born
at
Inverary
in
Scotland
, the
son
of a
Church
of
Scotland
minister
. At the
age
of
sixteen
, he
went
to
Jamaica
to
work
as a
bookkeeper
and
quickly
rose
to the
position
of
manager
of a
plantation
.
However
he
became
so
disgusted
by
slavery
that he
returned
to
Britain
in
1792
and a
year
later
went
to
Sierra
Leone
to
assist
Thomas
Clarkson
whom
he
replaced
after
a
short
while
as
governor
.
Macauley
was in
charge
of the
colony
for
six
years
and
despite
many
problems
and the
threat
of
invasion
,
it
prospered
under
his
supervision
. He
returned
home
after
his
health
broke
down
and
became
secretary
of the
Sierra
Leone
Company
until
the
colony’s
transfer
to the
Crown
.
Macauley
was
one
of the
foremost
abolitionists
of his
day
. His
chief
strengths
lay
in his
immense
energy
,
powers
of
organisation
and
encyclopedic
knowledge
of
statistics
. He was a
member
of
several
committees
and
served
as
secretary
of the
African
Institute
from
1807
to
1812
.
Macauley
was also a
founder
member
of the
Anti-Slavery
Society
and was

of
Slavery

no
fewer
than

societies
including

Missionary
Society

was a

there for the

.
Fuller
became
the

and was
unstinting
in his
support
of
missionary
activities
. He was also a
theologian
of
considerable
repute
whose
preaching
and
published
works
influenced
his
denomination
to
move
away
from the
doctrine
of
Hyper-Calvinism
. His

in
New
South
Wales
in

.
Dawes
was a
man
of
unyielding
principle
and was
dismissed
for
refusing
to
take

on
Aborigines
. He
returned
to
England
