From Lady Barham [Diana Noel] at Fairy Hill near Swansea, Glamorganshire, to Mrs [Elizabeth] Haweis at 5 Beaufort Buildings, Bath, Somerset. Elizabeth’s letter found her confined to bed or she would not have been silent for so long. She shares Elizabeth’s sorrows and her friend knows how Diana feels about Elizabeth and her children – may the young ones be spared to brighten Elizabeth’s declining days and may those days be long. She often prays for her friend during the long silent hours of the night – Diana now only has one other old friend left (Elizabeth will remember her from Bath). Diana must not write much more as she is very weak. She intends, God willing, to go to Llandindrod Wells in Powys towards the end of next month, so Elizabeth should not write here at that time. Diana hopes to build a chapel in Llandindrod Wells. Her love should be passed to Elizabeth’s children. (1 sheet, 4p.). |
Notes |
A memorandum on this letter by Elizabeth Haweis in 1823 states, "Lady Barham's last letter; she died Apr. 13, 1823". This same memo dates the letter March 17, 1820, but Mrs Haweis was in error both as to the day and the year. She had read Lady Barham's "14" as "17". The postmark, however, verifies the correct date as March 14, 1823. |
