From
Charlotte
Margaret
Noel
at
Kingston
House
,
Dorchester
,
Kent
, to
T.H
. at
Beaufort
Buildings
in
Bath
,
Somerset
. She
is
in
very
great
need
of her
God
and the
assistance
of her
kind
friends
.
Louisa
wrote
in
Charles
[Noel’s]
name
to
ask
her to
go
with him and
poor
Elizabeth
to
Madeira
(the
island
of
Madeira
was
under
British
occupation
from
1807
to
1814)
,
which
she
refused
saying
that
it
was her
determination
to
stay
with
Mama
(‘unless
papa
should
take
me’)
until
Charlotte
left
her for
good
,
which
of
course
she
is
not
anxious
for. Her
reasons
for
refusing
are as
follows
:
-
they are
all
Roman
Catholics
in
Madeira
and
Charlotte
would
therefore
have
months
without
attending
preaching
or
uniting
in
prayer
with
others
.
-
Charles
and
Elizabeth
would be the
only
friends
with
whom
she
could
converse
on
spiritual
matters
and she should not
like
to be
under
the
same
sort
of
‘spiritual
bondage’
.
Spiritual
matters
are
discussed
in
detail
. She has
received
another
letter
from
Louisa
from
which
it
is
clear
that she
thinks
that
Charlotte
is
being
unkind
. She
says
that were
it
not for her
children
, she would
go
herself
and
ends
by
saying
that they
do
not
know
if they will
ever
see
them
again
.
Charlotte’s
refusal
is
said
to be from
want
of
affection
, but she
knows
that
is
false
.
Poor
Charles
is
himself
in
poor
health
and has been
wholly
confined
by
attending
on her
without
any
friend
to
share
the
burden
. Should not
Charlotte
make
this
sacrifice
for her
dear
brother
?
–
she has
no
more
time
to
continue
this
letter
.
