John
Martin
(1740-1820)
was
born
in
Spalding
,
Lincolnshire
. He
moved
to
London
as a
watch
finisher
and
joined
the
Baptist
Church
under
the
influence
of
John
Gill
.
Martin
entered
the
ministry
and
served
pastorates
in
Huntingdonshire
and
Leicestershire
before
moving
to
London’s
Grafton
Street
congregation
in
1773
.
Under
Martin’s
ministry
, the
congregation
increased
in
size
and
moved
to
larger
premises
in
Keppel
Street
.
Martin’s
radical
political
opinions
in the
aftermath
of the
French
Revolution
proved
controversial
and the
London
Baptists
finally
disowned
him.
Martin
was
however
able
to
continue
in the
ministry
at
Keppel
Street
until
he was
incapacitated
by a
stroke
in
1814
.
