From Spencer Madan (younger brother of the prominent evangelical Martin Madan), Bishop of Peterborough, at the Bishop’s place in Peterborough, Northamptonshire, to T.H. at Aldwincle in Northamptonshire. Madan has been seriously ill for some time and was therefore unable to reply to T.H.’s letter of December 31st 1808 until this morning. Madan has certainly heard it said more than once and indeed had it written also in a letter by an anonymous clergyman that T.H. often ordained at Cheshunt in Hertfordshire and that Lady Anne Erskine attended these occasions also. This was however flatly denied by T.H. himself and Madan therefore did not attach any further credence to the reports. (1 sheet, 2p.) 12 January 1809 |
