From Sir W. S. Leigh at Ashbourne Hall to T.H. at Bath, Somerset. The sentiments expressed in T.H.’s letter and the earnestness with which T.H. pleads on behalf of Mr Guinshard(sic) serves to confirm the high character that T.H. bears. To injure Guinshard in any respect was very far from Leigh’s thoughts. He trusts therefore that the letter that he wrote to Guinshard, and the contents of which he has obviously confided to T.H., will not have any negative effect, but that T.H. will continue to treat Guinshard with kindness and hospitality. ‘The quarter from whence I received the information that Mr G. had gaily sung the songs in question, is very respectable and it was given with no degree of malevolence, and with no wish to injure that gentleman as an object of my protection – it was stated to me with some surprise and perhaps some supposition that Mr G. might be informed of it, as a simple fact that had actually happened.’ Leigh had no intention of withdrawing his protection from Mr G. nor does he intend to do so now. ‘But the question is easily resolved, as Mr G. certainly knows whether since he left my house in the last summer, he may not have been led astray by the persuasion of some, who think not [unreadable words due to a blemish on the paper] the spirit of those songs, as I trust he [unreadable words due to a blemish on the paper] to have sung them in the momentary gaity of his heart…’ 30 December 1794 |
