From Edward Kilvington at Fenstanton near St Ives, Huntingdonshire, to T.H. at Bath, Somerset. He must thank T.H. for one of the kindest letters that he has ever received. A prosecution has actually been initiated by Mr Cowling against [John] Cook for non-residence, but it is hoped from the delay that they will not proceed with the suit. Certificates from the doctor that attends on Cook and from other people in the neighborhood where he lives have arrived with Kilvington, stating that Mr Cook cannot be moved for reason of his health. These shall be passed immediately with Kilvington’s covering note to Mr Serjeant Le Blanc for his opinion. ‘I have just heard that a chaplaincy to a peer exempt from residence, if so, and such an appointment can be procured, I think it would be better to pay the penalty and costs of the present suit, than to quit an advantageous situation.’ Kilvington has suffered much with his eyes lately and is obliged to spare them as much as he can. Reference is made at length to a discussion concerning the exact meaning of a Greek word – this has been discussed at length in the British Critic under the name “Michaelis”.
