From Edward Kilvington at Fenstanton near St Ives, Huntingdonshire, to T.H. at Aldwincle. He is hopeful that matters are now settled between the Bishop of Lincoln [George Pretyman Tomline] and himself and that his remaining here may be considered certain. He had an interview with the bishop at Buckden on the 15th of last month and as he is so busy at the moment, Kilvington asked his wife to transcribe an account of the conversation for passing to T.H. There is still no word of the bishop’s final decision on the matter, but he has discovered from Mr [Charles] Simeon that Mr Bankes, who was to take his place as curate, has received a note saying that the bishop had decided to allow Kilvington to remain, as he had not gone quite as far as the bishop had feared. The conditions that the bishop has imposed amount to tyranny, but if Kilvington wishes to remain here, he must comply. (1 sheet, 2p.) 15 October 1794 |
