From Edward Kilvington at Fenstanton near St Ives, Huntingdonshire, to T.H. at Aldwincle. T.H. may recall that Kilvington’s second letter to the Bishop of Lincoln [George Pretyman Tomline] was a request that he be given the names of his accusers and the precise nature of their complaints. The bishop sent the following reply: I beg leave to assure you that I have acted in removing you from the curacy of Fenstanton from a sense of duty and upon the fullest testimony. I can therefore only desire you that you will lose no time in looking out for some other situation, not in my diocese…June 30th 1794 Kilvington would like to avail himself of T.H.’s kind offer of advice concerning the legality of the bishop’s actions and would also consider it a favor if T.H. could transmit the enclosed statement of the case to London for a legal opinion. If God does see fit to allow Kilvington to continue his ministry here, he trusts that ‘you may look forward…with the joyful expectation of seeing much fruit of my ministry; if he should determine to counteract my endeavors, I shall trust that it will be for the good…’ (1 sheet, 2p.) 2 July 1794 |
