From David Jones at Coychurch in Glamorganshire, to T.H. at Vineyards Chapel in Bath, Somerset. He is pleased that the woodcocks have arrived safely – he could also have supplied T.H. with a few hares during the winter but the transport was too questionable. The good news that T.H. sent concerning the mission in Sierra Leone is very pleasing. Jones is willing to give T.H. all the assistance in his power, but the work is so pressing in Wales, that he is sure that T.H. will excuse his absence from England. He does not know what to do for Lady Anne [Erskine] – he tentatively promised to be in town [London] about the latter end of March, but the people are very pressing for him to remain here. [Jennett] Haweis will know something of the ‘warmth of the poor Welsh in their solicitations of the Gospel. If he does feel called to go to London, he does not have the least objection to remain for a month at Bath on his return. (1 sheet, 2p.) 12 February 1794 David Jones (1736-1810) was born at Llanwyni in Wales, the son of a farmer. He was educated at Carmarthan Grammar School and was ordained deacon in 1758. He held curacies in Wales and Wiltshire before the influence of the Countess of Huntingdon procured for him the living at Langan where he was ordained priest in 1767. His ministry there lasted for over forty years and was strongly evangelical. In 1791 he built Salem Chapel to accommodate the large congregations and was a favorite of the Countess of Huntingdon, preaching her funeral sermon. |
