Plain Text Transcription
From
George
Hodson
(described
by
Skevington-Wood
as an
assistant
to
George
Burder)
in
London
to
T.H
. at
Beaufort
Buildings
in
Bath
,
Somerset
.
It
upsets
him that he
cannot
provide
T.H
. with
information
concerning
the
‘idol
and
fans’
. He
saw
the
box
mentioned
by
T.H
. and
witnessed
the
removal
of
every
article
in
it
; there was
nothing
in
it
addressed
to
T.H
. and
nor
was there any
idol
or
fans
,
except
the
[unreadable
word]
addressed
to
[George]
Burder
. The
necessary
enquiries
have been
made
at the
customs
house
but
without
any
success
. They have not
yet
been
able
to
meet
with the
captains
of the
Surrey
and
Shepley
, but have
left
word
with
Mr
Harper
at the
Jerusalem
Coffee
House
and also with a
merchant
with
whom
Captain
Raine
of the
Surrey
has to
transact
some
business
.
Perhaps
the
box
has been
sent
on
another
vessel
that has not
yet
arrived
in
port
.
No
means
of
enquiry
shall
be
omitted
. The
directors
of the
[London
Missionary]
society
have not
yet
come
to a
decision
concerning
the
various
important
points
connected
with the
affairs
of the
South
Sea
mission
–
they will be
discussed
again
on
Monday
but
Hodson
does
not
expect
any
resolutions
even
then.
[James]
Hayward
intends
to
leave
London
next
Tuesday
or
Wednesday
to
visit
relations
in
Dorset
. He will be
away
from
London
for
about
a
fortnight
and
hopes
to
call
on
T.H
.
before
his
return
. In a
postscript
, he
mentions
that he
does
not
know
if there will be an
opportunity
to
discuss
Mr
Gard’s
application
‘or
rather
offer’
on
Monday
.
(Mr
Gard
of
Devizes
had
offered
his
services
as
Superintendent
of the
mission
on
Tahiti.)
