Plain Text Transcription	From Oliver Heywood to Ralph Thorsby in Leeds, Yorkshire. ‘Thomas Cotton and my two sons have been with me two nights this week, and I have appointed with my younger son to supply for me the second Sabbath in June, which is June 10th, on which day I purpose…to be at Mill Hill. If you cannot have me on that day let me know, but my son cannot observe any other day, and my occasions suit me best with that. I setting forth for Dalk(?)…’ (1 sheet, 1p.) 14 May 1694 Oliver Heywood (1629-1703) was born into a puritan family. He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge in 1647 and began to preach soon afterwards. He and his brother Nathaniel were ministers in the same town of Coley. Heywood was one of those ministers ejected in 1662 for refusing to accept the re-introduction of the Anglican book of Common Prayer but he continued to preach in private houses. He also maintained an extensive traveling ministry – in 1681 for example besides his regular Sunday sermons, he preached an additional 150 times and traveled fourteen hundred miles. Heywood’s two sons followed him into the ministry. Ralph Thoresby (1658 - 1725) was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, the son of a cloth merchant. Thoresby entered the family business but was always more interested in history than commerce and when his father died, he inherited enough money to be able to devote himself to antiquarian studies. Thoresby spent the remainder of his life inspecting buildings and earthworks, researching pedigrees and exploring the history of his native town. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society and established a museum by adding 'curiosities' to the coin collection he had inherited from his father. He also corresponded with fellow scholars throughout the country including the botanist John Ray and the diarist John Evelyn. The work for which Thoresby is mainly remembered is his history of Leeds, Ducatus Leodiensis (1715).
