Plain Text Transcription	From William Alers Hankey in Brighton, Sussex, to T.H. in Beaufort Buildings, Bath, Somerset. T.H.’s letter of the 22nd inst. reached him in Brighton to where he has brought his family during his children’s vacation. Hankey was greatly in need of relaxation himself as he has been suffering under considerable nervous tension. The society has not yet found the person ‘selected to become the messenger of the Lord’ to the South Seas. Hankey will send T.H.’s letter to [George] Burder asking for his ideas on the probable suitability of the [unreadable word] that T.H. spoke of. T.H. did not say whether or not this person is in the ministry – some people think that orders would be necessary in this person, but Hankey himself does not consider it a sine qua non. ‘We want a man who knows well what man is, as an individual and in society; what man has been under the various forms of society which the history of the world presents to our view; what is the influence which the institution of civilized society have actually produced and would produce, as generally applied, to persons in the state in which he would find the South Sea islanders. We want a man qualified to mould a [unreadable word] of human clay, just beginning to feel the tempering influence of religion and civilization into a nation of well-organized active agents, by the due application of that religion and civilization of which the elements have just been imparted.’ In Hankey’s opinion the necessary qualifications are ‘[unreadable word] and the heart, enlightened and matured by grace, cultivation and experience are indispensible and if your friend has them, he bids fair to be the man…’ T.H. will not be surprised to discover that the society is in a state of perpetual want. They want a man of the qualities outlined above and they are also looking for someone to help Burder with the home secretary role, for he is unable to cope with the load placed upon him.
