From
T.H
. to
Beilby
Porteous
,
Bihop
of
London
. The
directors
of the
[London
Missionary]
Society
have
resolved
to
address
themseves
to
Porteous
in
particular
, as they have
done
in
general
to those
who
love
the
Lord
Jesus
. They are
grieved
that
Porteous
,
who
they are
convinced
is
in
agreement
with the
society
,
seems
to be
keeping
his
distance
from
it
. There
can
be
no
dispute
that their
objective
is
great
and
noble
. The
society
is
persuaded
of
Porteous’s
‘liberal
mind’
and that he
rejoices
when
Christ
is
preached
. He
must
approve
that
representatives
from
so
many
different
denominations
have
‘endeavoured
to
sacrifice
all
peculiarities
and
educational
prejudice
on the
altar
of
love
and
union…’
He
must
also
welcome
the
fact
that
all
political
matters
have been
excluded
from the
society
and that their
only
desire
is
the
pursuit
of
God’s
work
. With
such
an
extensive
field
of
work
,
it
would be
negative
to
adopt
a
party
or
denominational
line
–
a
secondary
benefit
has been the
promotion
of
harmony
among
Christians
from
different
traditions
. If
Porteous
has
ideas
as to how
God’s
work
can
be
further
promoted
, they would
welcome
his
wisdom
‘and
be
provoked
to
jealousy
by
your
example
. But
stand
not
idle
in the
market
place
,
whilst
others
are at
work
, and
plead
not the
insignificant
barriers
of
modes
and
forms…you
brother
are a
chosen
vessel
counted
faithful
by the
great
shepherd
and
bishop
of
souls
,
put
into the
ministry
with the
useful
charge
to
seek
the
sheep
of
Christ
scattered
through
this
naughty
world
.
You
know
the
value
of
souls…we
therefore
call
upon
you
in the
name
of
our
common
Lord…to
show
yourselves
on his
side
and not
permit
the
bondage
of
bigotry
or the
prejudices
of
education
to
[unreadable
word]
arm
from
exertion
or
your
heart
from
beating
high
in this
decisive
and
holy
warfare
.
We
wish
you
to
share
our
labours
and
our
mercies…’

[1796?]
Beilby
Porteus
(1731-1808)
was
born
in
York
, the
son
of
Virginia
colonists
who
had
returned
to
England
. He was
educated
at
Cambridge
University
and was
ordained
in
1757
.
Porteous
was
swiftly
marked
out
for
advancement
and by
1762
was
serving
as
domestic
chaplain
to
Thomas
Secker
,
Archbishop
of
Canterbury
. In
1769
he was
appointed
Chaplain
to
King
George
III
, and was
created
Bishop
of
Chester
in
1776
. In
1787
Porteus
was
appointed
Bishop
of
London
where
heremained
until
the
end
of his
life
.
Porteous
had a
particular
interest
in
foreign
missions
and this was
deepened
by the
fact
that
pastoral
responsibility
for
British
overseas
colonies
fell
within
his
Episcopal
jurisdiction
. He was an
enthusiastic
supporter
of the
Society
for the
Propagation
of the
Gospel
in
Foreign
Parts
, and
helped
to
organise
missions
to
India
and the
West
Indies
. He was also an
outspoken
opponent
of
slavery
.
