From Richard Ash Hannaford at Clopton near Oundle in Northamptonshire to T.H. at Beaufort Buildings in Bath, Somerset. When Mr S. mentioned Hannaford’s willingness to keep T.H.’s house (presumably Aldwincle Rectory) ‘wind and water-tight’ he did not add that these would be the only repairs that Hannaford was concerned with and that Hannaford could not agree to T.H.’s terms that he be responsible for all ‘dilapidations’ – Mr S.. heard Mr Roberts say that £1000 would not cover the costs. T.H. must have been unaware of the extent of the commitment or he would never have inserted this into the agreement. ‘I am not even aware of ever assuring you of the completeness of the repair of your house; if ever I did, it merely referred to external appearance. The roof (if it does not already) will soon take in rain. If T.H. wishes, Hannaford will rent the house, garden and close from T.H. and will leave it (with T.H.’s consent) to [William] Griffin and Mr S., who are acquainted with the condition of the house, to fix the rent. In a postscript, he adds that Mr S. sends his regards. Hannaford is presently staying with [William] Griffin and he says that he is willing to give the regular notice to Widow Haynes. Hannaford must enquire respecting Mr Posle’s house. |
