From
William
Griffin
at
Thrapston
in
Northamptonshire
, to
T.H
. in
Bath
,
Somerset
.
Griffin
is
pleased
to be
able
to
write
on a
subject
that he
is
sure
will
please
T.H
.
Soon
after
he
posted
his
last
letter
to
T.H
., he was
visited
by
[Frederick]
Powys
.
It
was a
very
easy
and
pleasant
conversation
.
Powys
related
that
‘It
could
not be
expected
he
could
be
so
explicit
,
nor
so
perfect
in
teaching
those
doctrines
, the
people
had been
taught
so
many
years
by
so
much
abler
hands
, but
thus
far
, he
might
be
allowed
freely
to
declare
that he
hoped
nothing
would be
wanting
on his
part
, as
far
as he was
able
to
instruct
the
people
for the
good
of their
souls
and in the
faithful
discharge
of his
duty
as a
minister.’
Griffin
had
seen
the
people
three
days
before
and was
able
to
reassure
him that
some
of his
sermons
were
highly
approved
of and to
gently
hint
at
some
areas
that were in
Powys’s
power
to
improve
upon
–
Powys
agreed
with the
comments
.
Encouraged
by his
openness
,
Griffin
ventured
to also
say
the
following
:
‘Mr
P
.
you
will
allow
me
to
say
Dr
H
. has been by his
brethren
in the
ministry
sadly
misunderstood
and of
course
shockingly
misrepresented
.
I
am
persuaded
it
will
give
pleasure
to a
generous
mind
to
do
justice
to the
injured
. The
Dr’s
religious
sentiments
are at the
bar
of the
public
in a
volume
of
sermons
in the
year
1762
(Thomas
Haweis
,
'Evangelical
Principles
and
Practice
:
being
fourteen
sermons
preached
in the
parish
church
of
St
Mary
Magdalene
Oxford...(London
:
J
and
W
Oliver
,
1762)
and
now
in
my
possession
and at
your
service
,
which
offer
Mr
P
.
gladly
accepted
, and would have
taken
them
home
in his
pocket
,
which
I
refused
,
begging
leave
to
convey
them
without
any
trouble
to him
which
I
have
done
accompanied
with a
letter
to
Mr
P
.
wherein
I
have
assured
Mr
P
.
so
long
as he and his
brethren
preached
those
important
truths
contained
in the
articles
and
homilies
of the
Church
of
England
,
you
and
your
brethren
would not
scruple
to
give
them the
right
hand
of
fellowship…’
Reference
is
made
to
Francis
Coales
in a
passage
that
is
very
difficult
to
interpret
.
Spiritual
matters
are
discussed
in
detail
with
particular
regard
to
differences
of
opinion
within
the
English
Church
.
